Magee Rehabilitation Hospital to Benefit from 2011 Philadelphia Marathon

Magee Rehab Hospital has been given 35 official 2011 Philadelphia Marathon entries. The marathon will be held Sunday, November 20.

Money raised will support Magee’s wheelchair sports program, which includes rugby, basketball, tennis, power wheelchair soccer and a racing team which will have members participating in the marathon.

A Magee Rehabilitation Hospital marathon entry costs $600.00 and includes: official entry in the Philadelphia Marathon or half marathon, a TEAM MAGEE racing singlet, complimentary marathon-eve pasta dinner for the runner and 3 supporters, free parking for the marathon at 16th & Race Streets (just blocks from the starting line), discounted room rates at the Hampton Inn at 13th & Race Streets (close to the starting line) and a pre-marathon, runner-friendly continental breakfast.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital Wins Operational Excellence Award from Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania

Magee Rehab received the 2011 Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP)award for Operational Excellence in the Small Hospital Group category for its WOW Discharge initiative.

The “Wow” Discharge project was initiated to improve patient satisfaction with discharge at Magee.

Since the implementation of the
“Wow Discharge” program, Magee has achieved ranks between the 88th and 99th percentiles five of the last six quarters, according to Press Ganey survey results.

Tools developed by the WOW Discharge initiative include a Discharge Patient Identifier, Patient Care Conference Discharge Checklist, Discharge Patient/Family Issues Reminder Form, and a Discharge Thank You Note. Additionally, Discharge Rounds with the physician, nurse, and case manager were initiated to answer final questions, and a process for making Discharge Follow up Phone Calls was designed.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital Joins Philadelphia International Medicine Network

Magee Rehab Hospital, ranked among the best rehabilitation hospitals in the United States for spinal cord injury, stroke, amputation, traumatic brain injury, orthopedic replacement and pain management has joined the Philadelphia International Medicine(PIM)network.

PIM provides medical and patient support services to international patients. It also provides continuing medical education and health care training to international physicians and administrators. As the international department of several Philadelphia-area hospitals, international patients gain access to physicians and hospitals rated among the best in the world.

Magee serves its patients through a 96 bed inpatient hospital and several outpatient facilities in and around Philadelphia. Magee—with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital—is one of 14-federally designated centers for spinal cord injury rehabilitation.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital Creates Videos to Help Those in Wheelchairs Regain Independence

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, through a grant from the Kessler Foundation, has created a series of short videos that show how wheelchair users can go about their daily routines and live life to the fullest.

On June 20, Magee released 4 videos on their website and YouTube page called “A Day In The Life” which star former Magee patient Frankie LaMacchia showing—and explaining—how he overcomes obstacles and uses available services to get around, get through chores…
…and have fun.

Each video runs about 15 minutes and covers: Home Mobility, Kitchen Mobility, Community Mobility and Fitness.

Locations around Philadelphia that generously allowed filming include The City of Philadelphia, SEPTA, Acme Supermarkets, The Sporting Club at the Bellevue, Diesel clothing, and El Vez.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital and Adam Taliaferro Foundation Tee Off on New Fundraiser

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital is partnering with the foundation of former patient & Penn State Alum Adam Taliaferro for a golf outing October 3, 2011 at the Green Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill, Pa.

Proceeds from the golf outing—which includes golf, dinner, cocktails and a auctions—will benefit spinal cord injury research, rehabilitation, and quality of life programs supported by both the Adam Taliaferro Foundation and Magee Rehabilitation Hospital.

Taliaferro was a patient at Magee back in 2000 when, as a freshman cornerback for Penn State, he received a spinal cord injury while making a clean hit in a game against Ohio State.

Phillies’ Skipper Charlie Manuel Named Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s 2011 Humanitarian of the Year

Philadelphia Phillies Manager, Charlie Manuel, has been named Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia’s 2011 Humanitarian of the Year, and will officially be recognized by the award-winning physical and cognitive rehab hospital at its 24th Annual Humanitarian Award Dinner November 15 at 5:30 pm at the Four Seasons Hotel on the Ben Franklin Parkway.

This is the second time in the twenty-four year history of Magee’s Humanitarian Award that the honor has been bestowed on a Phillie. Tim McCarver, former Philadelphia Phillies catcher and legendary broadcaster, was the first person ever to receive the award back in 1988.

The Magee Rehabilitation Hospital Board of Trustees elected Lisa Calvo Haas to its ranks on May 11, 2011.

Ms. Haas is a Member and Director of Business Development at Cozen O’Connor where she is responsible for the design and implementation of business development initiatives for the firm’s business law and commercial litigation departments.

Aside from her involvement with Magee, Ms. Haas serves on the Boards of Directors of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Princeton University Club of Philadelphia, and the Starfinder Foundation, and is the Chairperson of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce’s Third Century Initiative. Ms Haas is a graduate of LEADERSHIP PHILADELPHIA.

Two Magee Doctors Named Among Top Rehabilitation Physicians in the Region by Philadelphia Magazine

This year, two Magee Rehabilitation Hospital doctors’ exemplary care and expertise has landed them on the 2011 Philadelphia Magazine Top Docs list.

Dr. Barbara Browne (Stroke Rehab, SCI, Geriatric Rehab) and Dr. Guy Fried, Chief Medical Officer, have both been selected by their peers to the list, which is compiled by Castle Connoly Medical Ltd.

“A big congratulations to Dr. Browne and Dr. Fried on behalf of everyone at Magee,” said Magee’s President & CEO Jack A. Carroll. “Their patient care skills are great and they have produced consistently high quality care for many years. It is a wonderful tribute to Magee for them to be recognized by those in our medical field.”

A founding member of the Jefferson Health System, Magee Rehabilitation Hospital is the Philadelphia region’s first rehab hospital.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital Listed in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals in the Philadelphia Area Ranking

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital has made the U.S. News & World Report’s first-ever Best Hospitals Metro Area ranking for the Philadelphia area, placing 20th. The entire list is available online at www.usnews.com/hospitals.

The new rankings recognize 622 hospitals in or near major cities with a record of high performance in key medical specialties, including 132 of the 152 hospitals already identified as the best in the nation. There are nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide. To be ranked in its metro area, a hospital had to score in the top 25 percent among its peers in at least one of 16 medical specialties.

Magee is a 96-bed specialty medical rehabilitation hospital providing physical and cognitive rehabilitation services. Magee’s flagship facility is in Center City Philadelphia and it has 3 outpatient facilities. All locations offer comprehensive services for spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, orthopedic replacement, amputation, pain management and work injury.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital will hold its Eleventh Annual Night of Champions fundraiser on Friday, May 6 at the Sheet Metal Workers Union Hall on 1301 South Columbus Blvd., Philadelphia, Pa.

Tickets are $125.00 and include dinner,raffle prizes, music by local band 61 North and auctions of autographed sports memorabilia, exclusive gifts,restaurant certificates, getaway weekends,and travel packages.

All funds benefit the Hospital’s Patient Programs such as horticultural therapy, art therapy, chaplain services, wheelchair sports, and the patient resource center.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s Post-Concussion Clinic to be Recognized at Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Dinner Jan. 31

Magee’s Tim Young, MD and Todd Lewis, PhD, created a post-concussion clinic to help determine when it is safe for an athlete to return to their sport, and to use Magee’s physical and cognitive therapy expertise to address any complications that may arise from a concussion.

On Jan.31, The Philly Sports Writers Assoc. will acknowledge Magee at the 107th Annual Awards Dinner, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill at 5:00pm. Magee will also have a booth at the dinner to discuss the post-concussion clinic.

"I'm glad that Magee is participating in our banquet,” said Rich Westcott, president of the Philly Sports Writers Assoc. “Its new post-concussion clinic is providing a vital medical service to teams and athletes in our area.It's extremely important that people get the proper information in terms of learning how to deal with concussions."

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital Hosts 2010Sullivan Classic Wheelchair Basketball Tournament Dec. 4-5

On December 4 and 5, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm on Saturday, and 8:00 am and 3:00 pm on Sunday, wheelchair basketball teams will take to the court for the 9th Annual Dan Sullivan Wheelchair Basketball Tournament at the RiverWinds Community Center, 1000 RiverWinds Drive, West Deptford, New Jersey.

It may be the season of good will, but make no mistake about it, the teams competing are coming to win.

The tournament—named for Dan Sullivan, the Wheelchair Basketball Hall of Famer who founded the Delaware Valley Wheelchair Athletic Association in 1977—is sponsored by Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia, and will feature Magee’s own team, the Magee Sixers Spokesmen who are also supported by the NBA’s Philadelphia ‘76ers. Expected to attend on Sunday are Dan Sullivan, as well as representatives from the Philadelphia ‘76ers.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital has been named a 2010 Success Story Award Winner by Press Ganey.

Press Ganey currently partners with more than 10,000 health care facilities to measure and improve the quality of their care and their bottom line. Magee Rehabilitation Hospital is one of just six Press Ganey client facilities to receive this honor in 2010.

The Success Story Award recognizes facilities that have demonstrated leadership, implemented organizational change, and increased customer satisfaction. The award is a coveted symbol of achievement in the health care satisfaction industry bestowed annually.

To improve satisfaction of patients and their families, Magee adopted a “Culture of Excellence” involving all-day, all-staff interactive seminars that demonstrated the importance of positive attitudes, and accountability in the workplace. Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, Guy Fried, MD, local lawyer Harvey Kronfeld, Esq and GlaxoSmithKline, will be recognized for their contributions to healthcare at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s 23rd Annual Humanitarian Award Dinner, held on November 16 at 5:30 pm at the Four Seasons Hotel on the Ben Franklin Parkway.

Dr. Guy Fried has been treating patients at Magee for over 20 years. He is recognized often as a “Top Doc” by Philadelphia Magazine and has distinguished himself as a care provider, teacher, mentor and role model.

Harvey Kronfeld, Esq. was a spinal cord injury patient at Magee 23 years ago and has served on Magee’s Board of Trustees for over 10 years.

GlaxoSmithKline has been a friend of Magee for years, as well as our neighbor with their Center City Headquarters just across the street from Magee’s main inpatient hospital.

21st Annual Jerry Segal Classic Sept. 24

The 21st Annual Jerry Segal Classic to benefit Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 24, 2010 at the ACE Golf Club, and the Green Valley Country Club, both on Ridge Pike in Lafayette Hill.

The Jerry Segal Classic is the Greater Philadelphia Region’s largest one-day charity golf event. Over the last 20 years, the Classic has raised $9.4 million and every penny goes to the patients of Magee because there are no administrative costs because the Classic is run by volunteers.

The Classic begins with shotgun starts at 9:45 a.m. at ACE and 10:45 a.m. at Green Valley. The event includes brunch, golf, a cocktail hour with grand hors d’oeuvres and live and silent auctions.

NBA Hall of Famer Billy Cunningham added to list of local celebrities attending 21st Annual Jerry Segal Classic for Magee Rehabilitation Hospital September 24

Billy Cunningham, who played on the 1967 Sixers Championship team and coached the Sixers to another Championship in 1983, will be joining other local celebrities such as Howard Eskin, Scott Palmer, & Flyers Legend Bernie Parent, at the 21st Annual Jerry Segal Classic golf outing September 24.

The Jerry Segal Classic—which takes place this year at the ACE Golf Club and Green Valley Country Club—is the region’s biggest golf fundraiser. Over the last 20 years, the Segal Classic, through golfing, sponsorships and silent and live auctions, has raised over $9 million for Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell to Serve as Honorary Chairman of 21st Jerry Segal Classic

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell has once again agreed to serve as Honorary Chairman for the Jerry Segal Classic Golf Outing to benefit Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia.

This year’s Jerry Segal Classic, which is celebrating its 21st anniversary, will be held September 24 at the Ace Club & Green Valley Country Club.

In years past, Governor Rendell has been known to step in as the event’s guest auctioneer, cajoling bids from attendees on everything from sports memorabilia to exotic trips. He has been known to surprise attendees by adding experiences like watching Phillies playoff games or World Series games in the Governor's box.

To date, the Jerry Segal Classic has raise over $9 million dollars for Magee.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital Receives Award for Excellent Patient Care Practices

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital has received an Achievement Award from the Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) for its innovative approach to Patient Care.

Magee created a “Culture of Excellence” by instituting programs that teach Leadership Development and proper Service Recovery. Magee also implemented a Rewards & Recognition program to recognize those who excel in providing patient services.

The crown jewel of the “Culture of Excellence” programs is Magee’s REACH (Respect, Excellence, Attitude, Compassion, and Hospitality) course which combines learning about patient care with interactive activities.

Since implementing the Culture of Excellence, Magee’s rank in the Press Ganey database (which measures patient satisfaction in healthcare organizations through surveys) improved. As of December 31, 2009, Magee was ranked in the 92nd percentile. Employee turnover rates have also improved.

Sports Celebs and a Record Amount of Money Raised Mark Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s Night of Champions Event Last Friday

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital's 10th Annual Night of Champions, held at the Sheet Metal Workers Union Hall on South Columbus Blvd in Philadelphia last Friday, raised $185,000 (a new Night of Champions record) for Magee’s Wheelchair Sports Program, which includes rugby, tennis, soccer and basketball teams.

Guests enjoyed dinner, raffle prizes and auctions of autographed sports memorabilia, exclusive gifts, restaurant certificates, getaway weekends, and travel packages.

Katie Samson Foundation to be named as Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s Champion in the Community at Night of Champions Fundraiser Event on May 7

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital will present its 2010 Champion in the Community Award to the Katie Samson Foundation for its constant support of Magee’s Wheelchair Sports Program.

The award will be presented at Magee’s Tenth Annual Night of Champions fundraiser on May 7. The event-- featuring dinner, music, raffle prizes and live and silent auctions-- benefits Magee’s nationally recognized Wheelchair Sports Program, which provides former Magee patients and individuals with disabilities in the community with the opportunity to improve their quality of life through physical activity and competition.

The Katie Samson Foundation--through their annual lacrosse festival, raises money that is given to Magee and other charities that support spinal cord injury research, care, and quality of life improvements to those with spinal cord injuries.

Andy Reid added to list of local sports celebrities attending Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s Night of Champions Event on May 7

Eagle’s coach Andy Reid will be joining other celebrities from the Philadelphia sports world, including Howard Eskin, Adam Taliaferro, Billy Cunningham, Fran Dunphy, Mike Mamula, Scott Palmer, Joe Conklin, Pat Morris, Dave Shultz, Jon Harris and Brian Propp, at Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s Tenth Annual Night of Champions held on May 7.

The event, which begins at 6:30 pm, will be held at the Sheet Metal Workers Union Hall at 1301 South Columbus Blvd, Philadelphia.

The Night of Champions event includes dinner, raffle prizes and auctions of autographed sports memorabilia, exclusive gifts, restaurant certificates, getaway weekends, and travel packages. All funds benefit Magee’s Wheelchair Sports Programs.

The Legal Clinic for the Disabled Spring Celebration March 19

The Legal Clinic for the Disabled Spring Celebration will be held on March 19 at the Duane Morris LLC office at 30 south 17th Street from 5:30pm to 8:00pm.

Duane Morris LLC is a co-host of the event.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s ThinkFirst Program to Co-Host Anti Gun Violence Walk/Roll April 11

Run, walk and roll to strengthen your limbs and oppose illegal handguns in Philadelphia.

Magee Rehabilitation Hospital’s Think First Program-- which teaches kids and young adults to think first before engaging in risky behavior—and Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) will co-host the 4th annual Legs Against Arms 5k Run on Sunday, April 11, 2010 at St. Joes University.

Race registration is at 7am and the race starts at 8:30am at 54th and Overbrook Avenue.

In 2009, over 500 runners making up 10 teams particiapted.

In 2010, over 24 teams are expected to register.

Participants from local high schools, medical staff and families are among the teams registered and several wheelchair teams are signed up to participate.
