As the region continues to search for new sources of high quality jobs, an emerging industry sector is expanding rapidly. Defined as the sector of the economy that produces goods and services with an environmental benefit, the clean or green economy employs 2.3 million people and added half a million jobs between 2003 and 2010, according to a 2011 study by the Brookings Institution.
Clean economy growth is fueled by innovation and private sector entrepreneurship, and metropolitan areas are at the center of this evolving industry. In fact, the Greater Philadelphia region ranks fifth among the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas in clean jobs.
