CEO Council for Growth Publishes Human Capital Survey Report

The CEO Council for Growth (CEO Council), a group of prominent business executives committed to Greater Philadelphia’s growth and prosperity, released the results of its Human Capital Survey earlier this summer.  The survey was conducted to help identify the workforce and the human capital needs of the region’s employers and the region’s ability to supply those needs.

One hundred and ninety one companies in Greater Philadelphia were solicited for feedback on the 16-question survey.  Through combined efforts, a total of 64 responses were received for a response rate of 34 percent.

The survey uncovered two main challenges the region faces:

  1. Hiring highly skilled and experienced mid-level professionals/managers; and
  2. Recruiting diverse employees.

Another interesting finding was that a large percentage of employers surveyed indicated that they offer a variety of professional development programs to their employees. Nearly every employer (94 percent) offers company-run educational/development programs, but very few employers (18 percent) offer a pre-paid tuition program.

In spite of these challenges, the survey also identified some of the positive attributes of the region’s workforce.  Most employers (82 percent) indicated that the overall quality of the workforce from the Greater Philadelphia region was on par with, or better than, the quality of the workforce from other regions.  Ninety percent of all employers surveyed felt that their current workforce has the skills and abilities to meet their current business needs.  In addition, the variety and quality of education, cultural and entertainment opportunities available, a generally good quality of life, and the location and size of the region were all noted as top positive recruiting characteristics of the region.

The CEO Council plans to institutionalize the Human Capital Survey and conduct the survey on a bi-annual basis to update the Human Capital Working Group’s agenda, benchmark the Working Groups activities and inform the CEO Council’s partner organizations, as well as the region’s colleges and universities.  The Human Capital Working Group is currently chaired by Tony Conti, Office Managing Partner for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.

The CEO Council for Growth is the board of Select Greater Philadelphia, which is an affiliate of the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce
