Independence Blue Cross Answers the Call to Help Senior Citizens

Independence Blue Cross (IBC) employees answered the call from the Phones For Life campaign by donating more than 620 used cell phones which will help more than 3,000 senior citizens nationwide. For those employees who wanted to participate with the Blue Crew Corporate Volunteer Program, but couldn't find the time, this was their opportunity to get involved.

Phones for Life is the only non-profit organization distributing free cell phones with minutes to local senior citizens and domestic violence victims. The campaign was held from October 9 through October 20 at five IBC locations.

Phones for Life relies on cell phone donations by individuals, corporations and schools nationwide to support this much needed program.

The Blue Crew Corporate Volunteer Program is overseen by a peer advisory board, in conjunction with the associate events department, that meets on a regular basis to evaluate and select programs and events that will provide our associates with a wide variety of meaningful volunteer opportunities.

Blue Crew Mission
The Blue Crew mission is to strengthen the IBC Family of Companies' role as a leader in community service by involving all levels of associates, their families, and retirees in a comprehensive outreach program that easily connects volunteers with varied service projects that contribute to the well-being of a diverse population.

As of August 2006, 1,345 Blue Crew volunteers and their families donated more than 3,300 hours of service by participating in 61 ongoing and one-time volunteer events.
