Greater Philadelphia Among the Top Higher Education Sectors in the Country

Greater Philadelphia’s institutions of higher education make a significant economic contribution to our region. All 88 colleges and universities in the region and their 360,000 students create jobs, develop communities and provide talent.

Select Greater Philadelphia recently released an in-depth research study that demonstrates, in specific terms, the strength of this region’s higher education sector and its direct effects on Greater Philadelphia’s economy.

The study found that the total economic impact of our region’s colleges and universities is $15.2 billion - 4.8% of total gross regional product. Higher education contributes almost 7 percent of Greater Philadelphia’s jobs and almost 5 percent of this region’s total gross regional product, making Greater Philadelphia home to one of the top higher education sectors in the country.

The study also found that distribution of degrees by area of study is also consistent with the regional economy’s key sectors. That is why building a culture of collaboration between the region’s colleges and universities and the business community is critical to the sustainability of our region. When education officials understand the needs of regional employers, they can develop curriculum, training programs, and experiential opportunities that will provide students with the skills necessary to more seamlessly transition from the classroom to the workforce.
