U.S. Reps. Mica and Gerlach Describe Proposed Amtrak Funding and Rail Improvements to CEO Council for Growth
Rep. John L. Mica (R-FL), U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Republican Leader, and Committee member Rep. Jim Gerlach (R-PA), met last week in our Chamber office with several CEO Council members to describe federal legislative progress on Amtrak funding.
They discussed the $14.4 billion Amtrak re-authorization bill that passed unanimously out of the committee earlier this month. Notably, it includes a provision to develop high-speed rail on the Northeast Corridor, a project championed by Rep. Mica.
The discussion acknowledged the GPCC and the related efforts of the CEO Council in support of increased Amtrak funding for the Northeast Corridor and for Congressional reauthorization. Our vigorous advocacy efforts have consistently framed re-authorization as an issue of economic competitiveness for our region and this position has resonated with Rep. Mica and members of the Committee.
We will continue to monitor the progress of the re-authorization bill and express our support for increased, dependable rail service as a sound economic policy that also delivers environmental benefits.
