Today’s companies can power past the competition with a new way of thinking
What’s crucial in developing a competitive edge today? In our rapidly changing business climate, which hallmarks of artistic expression are proving to be essential?
The answer is clear. Innovation is our best response to today’s challenges, and creativity is the core competency. That’s because originality and imagination cannot be outsourced, and big-picture thinking does not come from the latest software.
A new way of working is needed. The creative abilities that for years have been underdeveloped and underused in business are now providing a foundation for success.
And Daniel Pink, renowned business analyst and best-selling author, will describe how to take a fresh look at your organization with new strategies at Cultivating Corporate Creativity, October 28. The Arts & Business Council of Greater Philadelphia and Towers Perrin, in partnership with the Chamber and Drexel University’s Goodwin College of Professional Studies, are presenting the event.
An engaging, thought-provoking and energetic speaker, Pink will show you:
- Which forces are altering the competitive logic of business and putting a premium on abilities that have often been overlooked and undervalued
- How smart companies are using the arts — such as design and storytelling — to pull ahead of the competition
- The six essential right-brain aptitudes that determine who moves forward and who falls behind
How This Region Measures Up
For a regional view, Brenda Jorett, WHYY-FM’s senior producer and host of Morning Edition, will moderate a panel with Pink and local leaders. They’ll outline how creativity plays a role in their businesses and present evidence of the impact.
In addition to Pink, panelists will include: Richard A. Hayne, board chair and president, Urban Outfitters, Inc.; Harvey Seifter, founder and chair, Creativity Connection of Americans for the Arts; Donna J. Sturgess, global head of innovation, GlaxoSmithKline; and Brian Tierney, chairman and publisher, Philadelphia Media Holdings.
Also, Tammy Mattson, managing partner of Towers Perrin, will discuss just-completed research that’s part of a Council and Towers Perrin initiative to explore creativity in the workplace. She’ll describe the successful drivers fostering creativity and innovation in this region -- and help to differentiate successful companies from the ones that lag behind.
