A Business Without a Sign is a Sign of No Business

Submitted By: Nacine Supinsky, President/Owner, Baker the Sign Man

If as we are told, the entire world economy is collapsing around us, and you haven’t chosen to permanently examine the inside of your oven or blown what is left of your 401K on a week long (or long weekend) bender in Vegas, it would be wise to consider the most fruitful, cost effective ways of generating new business. Not that this is a bad policy in any economic condition, but in times like this, the sense of urgency may seem greater.

One of the most under appreciated means of advertising is signage. An exterior sign announces your company name twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. Very few methods of advertising, if any, offer this rate of return on a one time investment. Interior corporate identity signs may not provide the extended exposure of an exterior sign, but a company logo or firm name prominently displayed in a reception area or location visible to the passing public greatly helps to amplify your brand. We have also found that this placement adds a sense of “completion” to the existing space.

As is the case with many things, signage can be designed for most budgets. From hand crafted to computer generated, most people are not familiar with the signmaking process or the possibilities. And although it is the responsibility of the sign company to make known to the client the abundance of options, the client should be proactive. Always ask to see samples and examples of work. Discuss the fabrication process. An expensive material often has a less expensive alternative. For example, stainless steel may be recommended for an interior sign but aluminum works just as well. The difference in finish is negligible whereas the cost difference is not. Also if you have an existing logo produced by a graphic designer, realize that the printing process is very different from sign making. Some designs are more complex than what the material available in sign manufacturing can achieve. Digitally printed signs afford more graphic detail but there are definite limitations. One of the many reasons why it is extremely important to work with an experienced sign company.

Baker the Sign Man has been fabricating interior and exterior signs in Philadelphia since 1870. This history not only affords us a unique knowledge of design and materials but it also enhances our sense of what will and won’t work. All of which is invaluable in the overall process, especially when it comes to meeting a deadline or a budget. At Baker the Sign Man we also offer a full array of graphic design services for logos and corporate identity as well as services to supply and maintain architectural sign systems for building management companies.
