Customer Service Excellence of the Year, Burman’s Medical Supplies and Specialty Pharmacy
Steve Burman’s career in the health care industry started well before his graduation from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He began as a stock boy and eventually became a pharmacy tech at the pharmacy his father opened in Chester, PA in 1965.
A few years before buying his father’s pharmacy in 1989, Steve founded a durable medical equipment company specializing in home medical equipment and respiratory services. After selling that company in 2003, he focused on the medical supplies and specialty pharmacy markets, to provide chronic and acute care patients, and their physician providers, with timely delivery of specialty pharmacy services, home infusion and direct-to-consumer disposable medical supplies.
With an uncompromising commitment to providing compassionate patient care, Burman’s customers are treated with knowledgeable, considerate, high-quality service. Their staff of 35—including pharmacists, diabetes specialists, wound care and urological supply experts—believes the most important concerns are a patient's independence, comfort and peace of mind. Two exemplary examples are services they designed for easier insurance authorizations, and a system to better communicate with the physician’s office that greatly reduces the time it takes for patients to start their therapies.
Burman’s also provides many personalized, free, same-day services such as deliveries to hospital patients for after-hours discharges, a long-distance delivery of medication to prevent a life-threatening situation, and even providing a nurse and interpreter to train a Vietnamese patient on injectable medications.
Steve Burman and his staff subscribe to a core philosophy to care for the people whose lives they touch and give back to the community where they work and live. They support many organizations including sports and teen programs, the Amerihealth Mercy Scholarship Fund, Tom Fabietti Scholarship Foundation, Drexel Neumann Academy, Health Partners Foundation, National Hemophilia Foundation and Canine Partners for Life. Last year, they provided ten paid internships through the Chamber’s Summer Internships program, with two of the teens now employed by Burman’s.
