Say "YES" to NO!
It’s a big No-No to forget about the word 'no' — That word is so small. It’s so powerful. Yet, it’s so underutilized.
If you find yourself regretting that you are saying "Yes!"... when you really want to say "No!"... remember this lesson:
Take off the cape! It’s Not so SUPER to be SUPERMAN or WONDERFUL to be WONDERWOMAN!
To increase your odds of keeping control over your calendar this year, try using "NO" more often.
Know How to Say "No." Let Us Count the Ways.
- Be brief. Resist the urge to over-explain why you cannot do something. No need to make excuses if you are booked.
- Be effective. Politely explain that you want to participate yet your schedule would not allow you to work at your best for the good of the project.
- Be brave. Don’t be afraid to say ’NO.’ Other busy people will nod their heads and understand. No true friend could fault you for having a full life.
- Be realistic. If part of a project sounds interesting, be precise about the exact responsibilities you are willing to accept. Also, itemize what you will NOT be able to do.
- Be supportive. Let others know you truly want to do a great job. Simply select assignments that allow you to shine. Offer to do what comes easiest to you. This will take less of your time and effort. You will be happier and will serve at your best.
- Be practical. Not all of us have the luxury of selecting our tasks. Many assignments are mandatory. We must learn to prioritize. Get a good game plan. Tackle the most essential tasks first on your list. Learn to say no to the rest, or at least provide a reasonable time table to address them after you what’s on top of your list.
Still No Good at the "No" Thing? Here’s "Some"thing to Remember:
Take responsibility start saying "No" with grace and politeness. Begin by inviting (not asking — inviting) others to pitch in on a project. Allow them to understand and respect your schedule. Recruit others to help you get the job done. Put the power of "NO" on your side. If you are allowing yourself time to accomplish your tasks with joy and ease, you may be happily surprised and you may gain new respect from those around you.
